Plans for Bridgeport Summerfest heat up this weekend

Share

A date change for the annual Bridgeport Summerfest has not changed the enthusiasm that the annual event will bring to the city this weekend, Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11.

The Summerfest was originally scheduled to be at Lanterman Park on June 12-13. Due to a boil order in the city, however, it had to be postponed. Luckily, entertainment acts scheduled for that weekend were available for the rescheduled event.

One such performance is Friday's featured musical entertainment by ''Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band.'' The entertainer from London, England plays the keyboard and sings with the finesse and the likes of the Rockabilly giant Jerry Lee Lewis. Terry Lee and his band will begin at 7 p.m., following the baby contest which is to begin with judging at 6 p.m., welcoming infants from two weeks - 36 months.

On Saturday, the Summerfest activities will be off to an early start as city-wide garage sales and flea markets in the park kick off at 7 a.m.

At 10 a.m., a first for the fest, a parade, will lineup at Red Hill High School.

An official welcoming to the festival will be given at 11 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony. Immediately following the ceremony, a pet parade and the Lawrence County Cruisers Car Show will get underway. Winners of the car show will be announced at 3:45 p.m.

At 11:30 a.m., there will be an egg toss and bubblegum contest, followed at 12 noon by a hot dog eating contest.

More entertainment is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. as the Jr. Pro Cheerleaders give a shout out for the Salukis. At 1 p.m., the Lawrence County Tumblers will exhibit their skills. Also, at that time, a horseshoe tournament will begin. The rock climbing wall is available from 1 - 7 p.m. for the adventurers.

At 2 p.m., the Little Miss and Mr. Summerfest contest will award youngsters who will represent the city throughout the year.

The aroma of BBQ Cook-Off will be put to the test with judging at 3 p.m.

Back by popular demand, ''Trouble and Company'' is the featured musical entertainment from 4 - 6 p.m. Karaoke will be from 6 - 8 p.m.

Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
