Lights go out on Pioneers Share
The lights went out on the Palestine-Hutsonville Pioneers in Bridgeport on Friday as the Red Hill High School varsity football team took their first victory of the season, defeating the visitors, 25-8. The night of interceptions worked in favor of the Salukis as Lucas Hahn began a series of airbound interruptions for Palestine-Hutsonville. Red Hill made a total of six pass interceptions, while the Tigers made only one. Still, the Salukis only gained 45 passing yards, while the Pioneers had 237. Red Hill made 7 of 22 passes. Palestine-Hutsonville made 14 of 38. The Tigers did manage to get the first score of the night on the board with a two-point safety. Eli Latch scored first for the Salukis with a 28-yard jaunt. Still in the first quarter, Tony Theriac intercepted a Pioneers' pass to begin a three-play trip to the goal. Latch's 12-yard pass to Conner Reed brought the Salukis up with a 12-6 score for the quarter. Red Hill gained on their opponent with 240 rushing yards, compared to the Pioneers' 10 yards. Theriac led the team with 71 rushing yards in 11 attempts.

In the second quarter, Theriac scored backed up by Trevor Albertson's PAT score. Palestine-Hutsonville answered with a touchdown. In the third quarter, Albertson finished up scoring with a seven-yard sprint for the Salukis to conclude four plays. It was the final score for both teams as an interruption distracted the teams and caused the game to be delayed for approximately 20 minutes. Reportedly, a local youth tampered with the light switch that controls the stadium lights. Barbara E. Allender is editor of the Bridgeport Leader.
