Proposed tax increase addressed by County Board
A budget hearing to address Lawrence County property owners' questions concerning a proposed tax hike was conducted in the County Board room on Wednesday, Oct. 21 prior to the regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The 27 percent increase breaks down to an estimated additional $50 per $1,000 tax bill, Kemper CPA representative Curt Benson explained.
The accountability of the board was questioned as one citizen and small business owner, David White, related reasons for the increase to ''unbridled spending.'' Reminding the board that they were ''elected to be stewards of the county - to control the spending, control the waste,'' White emphasized,''when I run out of money, I quit spending.''
Governor visits Lawrence County
Democrats are ramping up efforts in Lawrence County. Governor Pat Quinn delivered the keynote speech at the annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner, which was held this past Saturday at the Central Christian Church Banquet Hall in Lawrenceville.
In addition, the Illinois Democratic County Chairman's Association President, Alan Pirtle, was also present. Joe Weger, chairman of the Democratic party of Lawrence County, and Jim Akers, vice-chairman of the local Democratic party were instrumental in organizing the event with great success. When asked what all was involved in coordinating such a major event, Joe Weger modestly said, ''there were many of us who worked very hard on this.''
Bridgeport Banking Center undergoes personnel changes
Personnel changes at the First Bridgeport Banking Center have caused some members of the community to question the business operations of the institution. Its parent company, the Fairfield National Bank, is reaching out to customers to assure them that recent changes have been ''unfortunate;'' but that it is a ''rock-solid financial institution.''
According to Larry Rost, President and CEO of FNB, the work load demands that administration evaluate hiring one or more new employees soon. Although he did not elaborate on the current staffing, two longtime employees, Rita Palmer and Jan Andrews, are no longer working at the Bridgeport institution. He did say that two full-time employees and one part-time employee are currently serving customers at the local bank.
