Casey Reporter is Chamber Business of the Month

Serving Casey and the surrounding communities for 77 years, the Casey Reporter is the Chamber Business of the Month.

''We appreciate the support and the high quality coverage that The Reporter has given us,'' said Mary Gard, secretary of the Casey Chamber of Commerce. ''The Reporter has done a great job of focusing on the Businesses of the Month for the past year and a half, making the public aware of their attributes, and we thought it was time to recognize The Reporter.''

The Reporter is a weekly newspaper, employing 12 full and part-time employees. Mike Leichty has written sports for The Reporter since the fall of 1986. Sharon Durham joined the staff as a writer in June 1996, retired from teaching English in 2007 and now also serves as editor. Publisher Charlotte Land came on board in 2001, followed by Kyle Kusterman, graphic design-production, in 2003. Samantha and MacKenzie Connelly also help with production, and Marcy Shonk and John Lotz are part-time writers. Interestingly enough, Marcy had spent 18 years at The Reporter before branching out to start her own newspaper. Although she now works full-time as an advisor for the Indiana State University campus newspaper, she returned to The Reporter last year and is back to writing. John has been with The Reporter since February and although he focuses primarily on Marshall news, he also covers news in Casey.

New to the staff but not new to the community are Doug Athey and Jocossa Burson. Doug is working with local businesses as account executive, and Casey-Westfield senior Jocossa will be covering school events for The Reporter this year. Lois and Larry Potter distribute the newspaper to area racks and businesses.

The Casey Reporter began publication in 1932 under the ownership of J.M. Brown. It was purchased by Carl Snyder of Neoga in January 1937 but was sold in February 1937 to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Gust of Dieterich, who had been in the newpaper business for 20 years. They moved their equipment to 27 S. Central Ave. in Casey and printed their first issues on March 11, 1937. Seeing the need for a daily paper, Mr. Gust changed the name to The Casey Daily Reporter and published the first and only daily paper in Clark County. The paper was sold to Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Morgan in May 1945, and they moved the business to 15 S. Central, where it remained until 1975. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hamilton of Martinsville purchased the business in 1953 and published until April 1, 1960, when Mr. and Mrs. Scoville Groothuis purchased the Daily Reporter. Scoville was the son-in-law of Otto Gust, and the purchase brought the paper back to the Gust family.

In June 1975, the business was sold to Ron Isbell and Jerry Mckinney. Isbell became the sole owner in November 1976 and moved the newspaper 's office to 216 S. Central where it remains today. The daily paper became a bi-weekly in September 1984 and a weekly in September 2002.

Isbell sold the Reporter along with his other newspaper holdings under the banner Lincoln Trail Publishing to Community Media Group in April 1996. Lincoln Trail Publishing, which includes The Casey Reporter, The Marshall Independent Choice, and the Neoga News was recently sold again to Russell Publications, Inc. with a base in Peotone. This purchase increased the number of newspapers included in Lincoln Trail Publishing to include The Bridgeport Leader, The Oblong Gem, and The White River News, enabling the newspapers to expand their advertising market and offer businesses the opportunity to advertise in Clark, Cumberland, Crawford, and Lawrence counties in Illinois and Gibson County in Indiana.

''We appreciate the recognition from our local Chamber, and we look forward to continue being the best source of local news for Casey and the surrounding communities,'' said Publisher Charlotte Land.

Sharon Durham is a staff reporter for the Casey Reporter.
