MHS Boys Basketball Team Receives Another Honor at Recent School Board Meeting

Share

There was a full house at last week's Marshall School Board meeting as the High School Boys Basketball Team was formally recognized yet again. Although several of the players and coaches were unable to attend, 2A Coach of the Year Tom Brannon and several others were there, where they received a special award in honor of their 3rd place finish at State. Additionally, Board VP Ann Smith prepared and showed a special presentation celebrating the Lions' record-breaking season, after which it was announced that any Marshall team finishing in the final four will have a team picture displayed in their school lobby to commemorate the achievement.

In other notable news, Lauretta Morris, District Computer/IT Specialist, announced that a grant they had received would allow the District to send 14 Marshall teachers and administrators to the NECC (National Education Computing Conference) in Washington D.C. this summer. According to Morris, this conference will give Marshall educators an opportunity to see what's coming in the future, while enabling them to stay on the leading edge. She also indicated that they were working on additional grants totaling as much as $500,000; however, she wasn't particularly optimistic, noting that there is a lot of competition and having already received this most recent grant could actually impede their chances.

In the Superintendent's report, Rick Manuell praised teachers and administrators for the District's outstanding performance on the ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test). According to Manuell, Marshall students finished in the top one-third of the State, despite the fact that many of the districts Marshall finished ahead of had substantially more funding. He then elaborated on the report which showed that 82% of North students passed the Reading test and 89% passed the Math test, while 85% of the Jr. High students passed the Reading test and 88% passed the Math.

On the financial front, Mr. Manuell said the District is looking to spend $10-15,000 for boiler maintenance at South, and the Board also approved the purchase a new handicapped accessible bus to be equipped with a chair lift. While on the topic of finances, Board President David Macke praised District teachers and administrators for their concerted efforts to keep spending down in light of recent budget cuts, while still maintaining the high quality of education Marshall students receive.

Lastly, in regard to personnel matters, the Board approved the hiring of Kyle Shay as the new Jr. High PE teacher and also extended Superintendent Manuell's authority to make other necessary personnel decisions during the summer (between scheduled Board meetings).
