Rentfrow honored as 'local hero' Share
Joe Wiltermood said he was down to his last breath, held under water when his mower flipped and fell on top of him in a flooded ditch. He survived to tell about it, however, even if he didn't immediately know how he was rescued from the danger. It turned out that Ron Rentfrow was just crossing the 7th St. railroad tracks near Faith Baptist Church when the accident happened. Rentfrow snapped to action, moved the mower off the trapped man and literally saved his life. That heroic effort brought the retired lumberyard owner a plaque of recognition presented to him by Wiltermood through the support of the Neoga Firefighters/EMS Association. Before Thursday's pageant, Alan Baker, representing the firefighters, told the story of the rescue and commended Rentfrow's actions as ''the right thing to do.'' He said it was was people in a community like Neoga where people care about each other do. Wiltermood suffered a serious arm injury in the accident and had a longer-than-expected recovery due to an infection from the stagnant water. He was off work with the City of Neoga for nearly a month. However, he was alive and able to thank the man who saved his life.
