The History of Cumberland County's 108 Schools--past to Present Share
Crossing School (Dist. 41) was located north of Neoga, and would have had a modern day address approximating 147 County Road 1200N. It was in existence by 1901 and abandoned in 1947. Unfortunately, there is only one document in this file; that being a list of some of the people who taught at Crossing School: Lucy Lacy, Lois Carruthers, Gertrude Wilson, May Buchanon Coen, Mable Shores, Alice Dove, X.B. Dougherty, Florence Sutton, Sylvia Buchanon, Susie Grimes, Harry Ewing, Geneva Lacy, Ora Mathelda Bigle, Melded Basse, Doris Wilson, Grace Dresback, Harve Cross, Stanley Cross, Minnie Young, Mary Donahue, Ellen Peters and Mildred Sweangel. (some of the names may not be spelled correctly) More information is needed on this school. Copeland School (Dist. 85) was established by 1868. It was located in the far southeastern corner of Cumberland County, on the southwest corner of county roads 100N & 2400E. After it closed, in 1947, it was sold and moved a mile east, along the Cumberland/Clark county line, on 2480E, on the west side of the road about mile north county road 00N. Only one faded photo is in the file for this school; that being one from the school year 1913-14. Perhaps someone has a distant relative who attended this school that year. Those names are: Hack Hollensbe, Pauline Hollensbe, Ralph Ragon, Max Hollensbe, Dean harper, Audrey Kemper, Oral Books, Mildred Reed. Ethel Finney, Lodema Kemper, Opal Reed, Floyd Reed, Elmer Hollensbe, Lloyd Reed, Warren Finney, teacher Della McFadden, Arthur Barkley, Ray Finney, Garrett Ragon, Clell Kelly, Blanche Reed, Gladys Kemper, Jose Reed and Dave Reed. Christian Run School (Dist. 66), dating from prior to 1855, lays claim to being the first school west of the Embarras River in what was then a part of Coles County. It prospered for a good 75 years until due to too few students, it closed briefly for the school year 1925-26. It closed for good in 1945. It was located a mile north of the historically significant Salem Church, on the northeast corner of county roads 550N & 1350E. An old well near the road is all that remains of the school. The oldest class photo on file dates from 1902. The latest photo of the building, before it was demolished, dates from 1953. The photo of Christian Run School (above) is from 1933, when this article's author, Jerry Brown, was still but a gleam in his father, Edsel Brown's, eye. Attended school that year were: 1st Row: Byron Brewer, Bob Brown, Donald Evans, Dorothy Tinsman, Leatha Tinsman. 2nd Row: Donald Tinsman, Edna Fogleman. 3rd Row: Opal Brown, Mildred Evans, Nellie Dolan. Back Row: Hazel James, Ellen Calvert, teacher Opal Brewer, Edsel Brown, Elmer Fogleman and Raymond Tinsman.
