Lake Land College displays local talent at Art Heritage Show Share
The unique and inspiring work of local artists soon will be on display at the Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center on the Lake Land College campus. The college displays the art as part of the annual Art Heritage Show going on Oct. 1-31, with the awards ceremony to be held on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. for all exhibiting artists in the Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center. Awards will be presented to the first, second and third place winning entries in the professional, amateur and student categories, as well as overall best of show. The awards ceremony and exhibit are free and open to the public. Sue Powell from the Decatur Arts Council will judge this year's show and will offer individual critiques to artists upon request. Powell currently serves as the Gallery Director for the Decatur Area Arts Council where she coordinates the gallery exhibits, field trip programs and special arts events at the Madden Arts Center in downtown Decatur. She joined the staff of DAAC following a distinguished 25-year career as supervisor of cultural events for the Decatur Park District where she was responsible for its award winning performing arts programs. Prior to that, she was an arts educator and an arts education consultant statewide.Powell, who has a bachelor's degree in art education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, said she believes strongly in the value of arts education and the important role the arts play in our quality of life.

The First National Bank, Mattoon will sponsor the Amateur and Professional Division. The Prairie Field Folk Art and Craft Show will sponsor the Student Division, which is open to sixth through 12th grade students. Entries may be viewed during the Learning Resource Center hours of Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 9 p.m. For more information contact the foundation.
