2009 River Friendly Farmer William (Chick) Bugher

Share

Chick Bugher of rural Patoka, has been selected as the 2009 River Friendly Farmer (RFF) by the Gibson County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) board of supervisors. The RFF award was initiated in 1999 as a statewide initiative recognizing farmers who, through good production management, help keep Indiana's rivers, lakes and streams clean. Since then, over 400 farmers have been publicly honored for their stewardship.

Chick is a grain farmer in rural Patoka and quoted that ''he has farmed since he was born, but started on his own in 1960''. He also went on to say that with the newer chemicals and conservation practices, there has been a ''change for the better''. He farms around 2300 acres; owning about half of this. Over the years, he has installed conservation practices that include wascobs, filter strips, erosion control structures, grassed waterways, and no-tills around 300 acres. He has about 100 acres in CRP.

Chick has two grown sons, Mark, who farms with him and lives in rural Patoka, and Bob, a Toyota employee, and his wife Julie, and two grandchildren, Michael and Jaleigh, who reside in rural Hazleton. Chick also serves as president of the Lower Patoka Conservancy Board and serves on the Hull Ditch committee. He and a friend, Elinor Glenn, Princeton, are planning a trip out west in August and Chick will not be able to attend the state recognition; but, he will be honored at the 2010 Gibson County SWCD annual meeting in January 2010.
